My “art”

The search for the elusive

We are improvised actors in an unscripted play.
We cannot erase that bitter scene from the past, nor its consequences.
We cannot undo that wrong choice, nor  its aftermath.
We cannot strike out the fact that we were
in the wrong place at the wrong time…
and all that followed.
At the same time, reason drives us to find meaning,
a place within some kind of rational order.
But no such meaning is found.
Reason collides with the absurdity
of the human condition,
remaining trapped as long as it tries
to get out of it by its own means alone.
Reason fails until it recognizes itself
as the very cause of its failure.
The answer, if there is one, lies elsewhere,
in a territory inaccessible to logic,
which one enters only after a series of surrenders:
the renunciation of understanding,
of control, of explanation.
In that territory you fumble blindly,
without a goal or will, yet somehow
you move and you act.
This desperate search that achieves nothing
but the search itself, could be called “art”.
But since that word is now applied to almost anything,
we might more aptly call it the “nameless”.
Still, because language requires definitions
to be effective, let us reclaim that overused
and ambiguous term to say that my art is this:
the search for the elusive.
